About the Course

Team Baby: getting ready to breastfeed

Welcome to the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers' Team Baby module.

It’s a good sign that you are here.

The fact you are even reading these words shows us you are already a good way down the road towards being a breastfeeding partnership. It doesn’t just take the parent who has the breasts to make breastfeeding work, it takes a team.

We’ve been supporting new families for 40 years and we know that breastfeeding is team work. It’s about knowing how breastfeeding happens, knowing how newborns behave, accessing qualified support when things are challenging, providing encouragement and emotional support - and practical support around the home too.

It may be hard work for both of you. It can be challenging for the person with the breasts. It might be difficult for a partner to watch the person you love experience some challenges, but you can make all the difference.

This module is aimed mainly at an expectant couple: the parents-to-be.

However, it’s also useful for the grannies and grandads and the sisters and the brothers and the aunties and the uncles. Perhaps you didn’t breastfeed yourself? Or you did long ago when recommendations were different?

It might also be for the friends of a single parent who are going to be there for them in the early days of life with a new baby.

The module is broken into 5 sections:

  1. The decision to breastfeed
  2. How breastfeeding works
  3. How newborns behave
  4. What challenges can arise
  5. Where to get help

Within each section, you’ll find articles and videos along the way. You’ll also find some questions so you can check your understanding. Don't worry about ‘passing’ or ‘failing’. The aim is to empower you to become informed and confident.

At the end of each section, you’ll also find a ‘partner challenge’ – an activity you can do with your partner. It can take a few minutes in the car on the way to the supermarket, or however long you like. You can do them at any point in the course or afterwards!

Now click on the curriculum tab to get you started, once there you can click on each section in turn.

You'll find sections broken down into

  1. Lesson
  2. Study section
  3. Partner challenge

The quizzes are self-marked so you can see straight away how you are getting on.
